Year 1 /2 - Starfish

Welcome to Starfish Class!

The class teacher is Miss Dockerty. We also have fantastic support in Starfish Class from Mrs Watson, Mrs Venn, Mr Fuller, Mrs Bradbury, Mrs Davis and Miss Trego.

Please use this page to find out about our learning each term and to keep up to date with homework and other useful information.
Responsibilities in school

Within school, we encourage children to take on responsibilities and be active members of the school community. The children are able to take on roles including the School Council, Eco Warriors, Online Safety Champions and Kindness Champions.
Key information
  • We have PE on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. (Please come to school wearing your PE kit).
  • Show and Tell is on Fridays.
  • On a Friday, one child will be chosen as the 'Banwell Bee' for their behaviour and attitude to learning throughout the week. If your child is the Banwell Bee they will bring home our class bear, Ted, for the weekend!
Homework
Supporting your child with reading at home will make a huge difference to their progress at school. We have a 'reading beach' in class, through which we celebrate how many times the children have read at home each week. All of the children are keen to get to the bright yellow sun at the top of the beach, however our expectation is that your child reads at least 5 times a week, where possible. We ask that you make a quick note in your child’s reading record book (initials and the date is fine, or a little note if you want to comment) every time you hear your child read.

Show and tell

We love to celebrate home learning in school and show and tell at the end of the day is the perfect opportunity for this. Our Show and Tell Day is a Friday. When your child has continued their learning at home, for example finding something linked to a season on a walk or has got an achievement that they are proud of, maybe a swimming certificate or a boxing medal, please encourage them to bring it in on our show and tell days and they can proudly share their learning with the class.

Term 1 - Under the Sea!

We started the year with a whole-school project 'Under the Sea'. Based on the story 'Somebody Swallowed Stanley' the children explored global issues around litter in the sea.

We started the project by researching an artist from Cornwall, Bonnie Steward, who regularly goes on beach cleans and uses the litter that she finds to create beautiful pieces of artwork. We used Bonnie Steward's work as a basis of our own.
We also used "Austin's butterfly" as inspiration to develop our sketching. By doing the same sketch multiple times we have been able to see our own progress. We collected litter from our homes and bought it into school to re-purpose it.

We have created our very own under the water scenes, using both our sketching skills and the litter collected from our homes.

Please see below pictures of Bonnie Steward's work, as well as our very own "rubbish" pictures. We hope you like our artwork!

Phonics
If your child is in Year One, they will be taking the Phonic Screening Check in 2025. If your child is a Year 2 child who has not yet met the expected standard in reading they will also be taking the check. It is important that your child learns to say the sounds correctly. Please see a link at the bottom of this page which shows a child confidently says each sound as it it should be.
